IIChE BRC Er. D.P. Misra Distinguished Oration by Dr. Rabinarayan Patra, Former CMD, IREL

Misra Distinguished Oration Award was presented to  Dr. Rabinarayan Patra, Former CMD, Indian Rare Earths Limited, Mumbai, on 27th September 2023, at CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar. He delivered a lecture on the topic, "Material Challenges in Energy Transition: Wealth from Waste". The talk was attended both physically and virtually by more than 170 participants, including members from IIChE, IIM, IIME, as well as scientists, project assistants, research scholars and technical staff of CSIR-IMMT, and was well apreciated. Er. D. P. Misra, who could not be present physically, joined virtually, thanked IIChE BRC for instituting an award in his name, and appreciated Dr. Patra for choosing a topic, which is very relevant in the present day.

ODICHEM-2022, a seminar on the theme “Investment Opportunities for Ancillary and Downstream Industries in Odisha” was organized on 15th October 2022 at Hotel New Marrion, by IIChE Bhubaneswar Regional Centre in association with Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation of Odisha Limited (IPICOL). The event was a part of 75th IIChE Platinum Jubilee year celebration. The seminar was steered by Mr. D. P. Misra as the Chairman, Swati Mohanty as Co-Chairman, Dr. Swagatika Dash as Organizing Secretary, Dr. Boopathy R. as Jt. Organizing Secretaries and Ms. Barsha Marandi as the Treasurer. The seminar was inaugurated by Shri Pratap Keshari Deb, Hon'ble Minister for Energy, Industries, and MSME, Govt. of Odisha. Keynote lectures were delivered by Mr. M.P.Mishra, Director (P&T), NALCO, Mr. Debashish Nanda, Director (Business Development)., CIL, and Mr. Rajiv Kumar, Vice President (Operation), Tata Steel Kalinganagar in this seminar. The major sponsors for the seminar were Excel Industries, MGM Minerals, Silox India Private Limited, NALCO. Senior and experienced executives from different industries/organizations, HINDALCO, Essar Minmet Ltd., JSPL, CSIR-IMMT, SAIL-RSP, Vedanta Aluminium, IOCL, IFFCO, and IREL Ltd. presented their deliberations in technical sessions. They primarily focused on the scope for investment in the ancillary and downstream sectors. A total of thirteen presentations were made, and 103 delegates participated in the seminar. A souvenir containing all the deliberations was released on the occasion.

   
Lecture by Prof. Kota Hanumantha Rao, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway    

 

On 5th September 2022, IIChE Bhubaneswar Regional Centre organized an invited talk by Prof. Kota Hanumanth Rao, Department of Geoscience and Petroleum, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway, on the topic "New Chemistries for Sustainable Processing of Raw Materials". The venue was, S.S. Bhatnagar Hall, CSIR-IMMT. This was followed by felicitating him with CDS Citation, Medal and cash award by Prof. S. Basu, LOC Chairman, CHEMCON-2021.

  Students’ Seminar on “Challenging Applications of Chemical Engineering (CAChE-2K19)”    

 IIChE-Bhubaneswar Regional Centre in association with CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar organized a Students’ Seminar, entitled “Challenging Applications of Chemical Engineering (CAChE-2K19)” on 30th March 2019. Only Chemical Engineering students [both from B.Tech/B.E. (P

re-Final year and Final Year) and M.Tech/M.E./M.S.] from various institutes across the country were invited to present their research work. Twenty two abstracts were received from institutes like IIT Kharagpur, NIT Rourkela, BITS Mesra, IGIT Sarang, Tripura University, Calcutta University, Parala Maharaja Engineering College, Berhampur, GIET Gunupur, and CV Raman College of Engineering, Bhubaneswar. Awards were given to the three best papers in both categories i.e. UG and PG and participation certificates were given to all the participants. There was a participation of 32 students and 20 IIChE members

 IIChE Bhubaneswar Regional Centre organized an invited talk by Prof. Ajay Kumar Dalai, Canada Research Chair of Bio-energy and Environmentally Friendly Chemical Processing & Professor, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, University of Saskatchewan, Canada on 17 January 2019. The talk was delivered on the topic “Development of novel adsorbents for carbon dioxide capture” at CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar.

IIChE Bhubaneswar Regional Centre organized a talk by Prof. Kaustubha Mohanty, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Guwahati, on 26 June 2018. He delivered a talk on the topic "Microalgal Based Biorefinery Coupled with Enhanced CO2 Sequestration.

Silver Jubilee Celebration and Foundation Day Function  

   
Silver Jubilee Celebration and Foundation Day Function of the Center was held on 12th September 2017. Padmashri G. D. Yadav, VC, Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai was the Chief Guest and Mr. D. P, Misra, Director, DCPL , and former Dy. MD, Jacobs Engineering was the Guest-of-Honour. A quiz contest among the students of  Chemical Engineering Colleges in Odisha was held. Prof. Yadav delivered a lecture on  Critical Role of Chemical Engineering in Prime Minister's Missions for New India. Mr. D. P. Misra was felicitated for his contribution to Chemical Engineering and to IIChE Bhubnaeswar Regional Center. A Souvenir was also released to commemorate the occassion.    

Odisha-Investors’ Destination for Chemicals and Petrochemicals

   
A seminar on Odisha-Investors’ Destination for Chemicals and Petrochemicals was organized during 27th -28th April 2017 by IIChE Bhubaneswar Regional Centre. Twenty five invited speakers delivered lectures on various topics related to prospects of chemicals and petrochemicals industries in Odisha. Shri D. P. Misra was the Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Dr. C. R. Panda was the Organizing Secretary. The seminar was inaugurated by Shri Debi Prasad Mishra, Honourable Minister of Industries, Government of Odisha. Padma Vibhushan Prof. M. M. Sharma, FRS, delivered the keynote address. Top officials from IOCL, RIL, IDS IVL Dhunseri, India Glycols, thyssenkrupp, CIPET, IDS(P) Ltd, Thirumalai Chemicals,  Fluor India, Adani Group, IFFCO, KPMG, Pidilite Industries, Paradip Port and  Paradip Investment Region Development Board and top Consultants delivered talks.  Around 100 delegates participated in the 2- days seminar. A panel discussion moderated by Shri Bibek Patnaik, IAS (Retd.) was held at the end of the seminar and the recommendations were prepared for communication to Government of Odisha and Government of India.The seminar was sponsored by IPICOL-Invest Odisha and IOCL..    

Seminar on Non-ferrous Mineral Industries-Growth & Challenges

   

IIChE BRC organized a Seminar on Non-Ferrous Mineral Industries-Growth and Challenges  on 2nd & 3rd December 2015 at Hotel New Marrion, Bhubaneswar. Twenty three Invited Speakers delivered lectures on topics related to Aluminium, Beach Sand Minerals and Cu-Ni-Co-Zn.  A total of 106 delegates, including the speakers participated in the seminar. The seminar was steered by Mr. D.P. Misra as the Chairman, Mr. J. Rath as the Co-chairman, Dr. Swati Mohanty as the Organizing Secretary, Mr. Rajesh Kanungo and Mr. Swagat S. Rath as the Jt. Org. Secy. and Dr. M.K. Ghosh as the Treasurer. The Gold Sponsors were Hindalco Industries Limited, IPICOL, NALCO, Vedanta Limited and the Silver Sponsors were Nicomet Industries Limited and Excel Industries Limited. The Chief Guest of the seminar was Mr. Debi Prasad Mishra, Hon’ble Minister of Industries, School & Mass Education, Govt. of Odisha. Mr. Sanjiv Chopra, IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of Industries, Govt. of Odisha, was the Guest of Honour. The seminar ended with a valedictory function with Mr. Prafulla Kumar Mallick, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent) for Steel and Mines, Govt. of Odisha as the Chief Guest.  An industrial trip to IREL, Chhatrapur was organized for the delegates.

Seminar on Coal Gasification

A Seminar On Coal Gasification, was organized by the IIChE Bhubaneswar Centre in Hotel Marrion, Bhubaneswar, on 26th November 2014. The seminar was steered by Mr. D. P. Misra as the Chairman, Prof. G.K. Roy as Co-Chairman, Mr. B.V.R. Murthy as Organizing Secretary, Dr. P. C. Rath and Dr. Swati Mohanty as Jt. Organizing Secretaries and Dr. Kadambini Sarangi as the Treasurer. The major sponsors for the seminar were JSPL, GAIL, RCFL and IOCL. The Guest of Honour on this occasion was Dr. K.V. Raghavan, the former Director of CSIR-IICT and Vice President of INAE. He delivered a lecture on ‘Coal Gasification- Technological Challenges’. Mr. R.G. Rajan, CMD, Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd., was the Distinguished Guest and Mr. Debi Prasad Mishra, Hon’ble Minister of Industries, Govt. of Odisha, was the Chief Guest. Many senior officials from Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd., JSPL, Fluor India, Air Lquide, ThyssenKrup, Jacobs India, RCFL, Haldor Topsoe, IOCL, Essar Ltd., DCPL, CMPDI and Naltern Technologies delivered the talks.  They discussed about the coal deposits in Odisha, prospects of coal gasification and its use in the steel, fertilizer and chemical industries.  A total of seventeen presentations were made, and 106 delegates participated in the seminar. A souvenir and a CD containing the papers presented in the seminar were also brought out.

 

Seminar on PCPIR-Paradeep

 

A Seminar on Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemical Investment Region at Paradip (PCPIR-Paradip), was organized by the IIChE Bhubaneswar Centre in association with the Indian Chemical Council, Mumbai, in Hotel Marrion, Bhubaneswar, on 10th March 2014. Mr. J.N. Mohanty was the Organizing Secretary. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Dr. Stanley Higgins, CEO, NEPIC, UK, who delivered a talk on ‘Plan for PCPIR by NEPIC’. Top officials from IOCL, IPICOL, Paradip Port Trust, Uhde India, Celanese, NEPIC (UK), Jacobs (UK), VOPAK (Singapore), Agility Logistics (UK) and CIPET delivered the talks. They discussed about the prospects of downstream processing units in Paradip, with the commissioning of IOCL refinery there. A total of fourteen presentations were made, and 103 delegates participated in the seminar. A panel discussion was also held which was moderated by Mr. D.P. Misra, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee. A trip to Paradip was arranged for the interested investors.

 

Lectures and Quizes at C V Raman Engg. College Bhubaneswar

 IIChE BRC organized a seminar talk by Mr. D.K. Behera, Sr. Environmental Engineer, Odisha State Pollution Control Board and a Quiz   programme among the Chemical Engineering students of C.V, Raman Engineering College, Bhubaneswar on 12th February 2013.

 

Work shop on Prospects of Alumina and Aluminum Industries in ODISHA

IIChE Bhubaneswar chapter organized a work shop “ Prospects of Alumina and Aluminum Industries in ODISHA” on 23rd June, 2012 at 3pm at Hotel Marrion, Bhubaneswar. IIChE members of Paradeep, damonjodi, Rourkela and Bhubaneswar regional centers, Engineering colleges such as IGIT,Sarang and C.V Raman Engg.Colleges joined in this programme. About 30 engineers/Technologists/Industrialists and Academicians from various organizations such as Bedanta, lanjigarh, Jindal steel and powers, Bhubaneswar, NALCO, RSB, and HINDALCO etc. Dr.Mukesh Kumar, Vice president and COO, Bedanta, lanjigarh, Mr. K.K.Nanda,DGM, NALCO, Dr. O.N.Mohanty of RSB and Mr. N.R.Sahu, Senior environmental Engineer, Orissa state Pollution control board gave invited lectures and discussed various issues on Alumina and Aluminum industries in ODISHA. Many industrialists joined in the meeting and made it as a very success meet.Last but not the least this year EC , IIChE BRC decided to felicitate best Chemical Engg. Graduate(2010-11 batch) of IGIT Sarang, and C.V.Raman Engg. College. Mr. Satyanarayan sahu of IGIT, who is presently working in the AdityaBirla group , has kindly agreed to come and he was felicitated by the Chairman. Mr. Siba Narayan , student of C.V.Raman Engg College could not attend the same.

 

CHEMCON-2003

 

The Indian Chemical Engineering Congress-2003 (CHEMCON-2003) and the 56th Annual Session of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) was organized by IIChE, Odisha State Coordination (comprising of Bhubaneswar, Damanjodi and Rourkela Regional Centres) in association with Regional Research Laboratory (presently CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology), Bhubaneswar during 19th-22nd December 2003. The National Organizing Committee was headed by Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commision & Secretary, Dept. of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India and the Local Organizing Secretary was Mr. Jitendra N. Mohanty. Hon’ble Shri K.C. Pant, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission of India inaugurated the Congress as the Chief Guest and Shri Naveen Patnaik, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour.

 

Dr. P.G. Rao, President, IIChE delivered the Presidential address. Prof. L.K. Doraiswamy, ex-Director, NCL, Pune received the B.P. Godrej Life Time Achievement Award. In total, 900 delegates attended the conference. One day International Symposium on Role of Chemical Engineering in Processing of Minerals and Materials was also held during the conference. In total 25 invited lectures were delivered including the CHEMCON Distinguished Speaker lectures. Three hundred papers were presented in six parallel sessions and 150 papers were presented through posters.

 

CHEMINAR-2001

 

A National Seminar on Application of Chemical Engineering in the Utilization of National Resources (CHEMINAR -93) was held during 16th – 18th Feb. 2001 was organized by IIChE, Odisha State Coordination, comprising of Bhubaneswar, Damanjodi and Rourkela Regional Centres under the chairmanship of Shri P. Parvathisen, CMD, NALCO. Dr. K. Sarveswar Rao was the Organising Secretary. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. D. P. Bagchi, Chief Secretary, Government of Odisha. Prof. G. D. Yadav, UDCT was the Chief Speaker. More than 200 delegates participated and 67 papers were presented in seven technical sessions during the 3-day seminar. An industrial exhibition and an Industry-Institute Meet was also inaugurated by Shri B. L.Chandak, DGM, SIDBI, Bhubaneswar.

 

TECHSHOP-96 

 

An Industry-Research meet on Technology Commercialisation was organized jointly during Sept. 19th – 20th 1996 by IIChE, Bhubaneswar Regional Centre, Regional Research Laboratory (presently CSIR-Institute of Minerals & Materials Technology), Bhubaneswar, and Industrial Development Bank of India, Bhubaneswar. Deliberations were made on technology development, technology transfer and technology commercialization. About 100 delegates representing industry, consultancy firms, research laboratories, financial institutes and national banks participated in the national workshop. Twenty eight invited lectures and twenty technical papers were presented during the two-day seminar. Prof. R. Natarajan, Director, IIT-Madras was the Chief Guest and Shri V. Viswanath, GM, IDBI, Bhubaneswar was the Guest of Honour on the occasion. Shri P. S. R. Reddy was the Convenor of the workshop.

 

ENERGYSHOP-94

 

Energyshop-94, an interactive meeting on energy management and conservation was held during Feb. 23-25, 1994. The event was jointly organized by IIChE Bhubaneswar Regional Centre (BRC) and Regional Research Laboratory (presently CSIR-Institute of Minerals & Materials Technology), Bhubaneswar, in conjunction with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Odisha State Centre with an objective of reviewing the prevailing methodology of the State of Odisha to propagate the concept of meaningful management and judicious conservation of energy in all walks of life. The event was organized under the chairmanship of Prof. H. S. Ray, Director, RRL, Bhubaneswar and coordinated by Mr. M. R. Panigrahi. About 100 participants including delegates and invitees benefitted by the seventeen invited lectures from eminent personalities.

 

CHEMINAR-1993

A National Seminar on Application of Chemical Engineering in the Utilization of National Resources (CHEMINAR -93) held during 24th – 25th Feb. 1993 was jointly organized by IIChE, Bhubaneswar Regional Center and Regional Research Laboratory (presently CSIR-Institute of Minerals & Materials Technology), Bhubaneswar. Prof. H.S. Ray, Director, RRL (presently CSIR-Institute of Minerals & Materials Technology), Bhubaneswar was the Chairman and Dr. K. Sarveswara Rao was the Convenor. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. G. Thyagarajan, Director, CLRI, Madras. Ten invited lectures and 70 technical papers were presented in eight technical sessions. About 200 delegates including few from Germany, Ukraine and Bangladesh participated in the two-day seminar.
